Is “personal umbrella insurance” the same as “personal liability insurance”?

Question by curiousbetty: Is “personal umbrella insurance” the same as “personal liability insurance”?
Hi, I have insurance with USAA and the apartment complex I am applying to requires personal liability insurance. USAA offers personal umbrella insurance and I wasn’t sure if it was the same thing? Thanks.

No. An umbrella policy is in addition to a liability policy, paying after the liability runs out. You’d get liability on a renter’s policy.

An umbrella policy is for coverage above and beyond where your principal policy stops. When my children were teenagers and my risk of them having an auto accident was greater, and a parent would sue me for a million dollars if their child was killed or permanently injured,( a million was a lot when my kids were teenagers ) so I had an umbrella policy which was a rather cheap premium so I would not risk losing my house and cars if involved in a lawsuit.

If you already have insurance w/ USAA, you have a personal liability policy.
